A moonless evening

The mist swirls around their feet

Two faceless strangers

Walking down the street

The girl in the hood

With a secret smile

The man in the trench coat

Who’s been searching for a while

A chance meeting

When they collide in the dark

On the sidewalk

Next to the park

“Sorry Miss,

Didn’t mean to give you a fright”

“It’s okay Mr.

Say, you got a light?”

With steady hands

He lights a match

He tries again and again

But it doesn’t catch

“I’m sorry miss

It was my last one”

“It’s OK Sir,

Just making sure you’re alone”

“Alone? But why?

Are you up to something foul?”

“Not really Sir,

Just a Reaper in Training, collecting my first Soul”

A frisson of electricity
Crackling through the air
As I walk down the road
While a thunderstorm threatens

Foreboding clouds
Pushing for first place
Friction lighting up the sky
From black to grey to white...

Alone in this busy world

But I am not loud enough
