ORDERED cHaOs

FOOTSTEPS ECHO
in the empty halls
OF MY CHAOTIC MIND
frantically racing
TOWARDS AN OPEN DOOR

an invisible stampede
OF UnOrDEreD THOUGHTS
fighting TO BE set free

a SHIMMER in the AIR
A RIPPLE IN THE waters of TIME
AS THEY ACHE
to flow freely

Spreading their touch
CREATING HAVOC
in the uniformity
of mundanity
STIRRING up the peace
creating
ORDERED chaos!

Stranger...

There he stands
On the outskirts of my mind
Wandering about
Lost in thought
He stops a moment
And I hide away
It feels as if
He senses my presence
I see him look around
Shake his head and keep on walking
I watch him in silence
This mystery man
Why does he linger
In the recesses of my mind?
What does he mean to me?
Why do I need to know more?
Is he a guardian angel?
Or perhaps the bearer of bad news…?
Why does he stare?
Why doesn’t he come closer?
Why does he roam
On the very edge
Of this abyss
That is my mind?
A haunting memory…
A remembered fear…
An inexplicable feeling
Of overwhelming apprehension…
The need within me builds
I reach out to him
A gentle tap on his shoulder
He slowly turns to me

The image shatters

~Shamshaad~

Sleep...

The tantalising fingers
of serenity
gently beckon
to my tortured soul

The sweet whispers
of oblivion
tempt me
to a realm unknown

The lingering promise
of solitude
drags me
to a darkened road

The delicious ecstasy
of freedom
urges me
to reach out

The ferocious energy
of stillness
embraces me
and makes me whole

I lose myself
within the confines
of a seething
ordered chaos

Falling deeper
into an endless abyss
of this false death

called sleep...
~Shamshaad~

Facing myself...

She walks before me
The world at her feet
A famous celebrity
We all wish to meet

The sway of her hips
The flick of her hair
The way she crosses her legs
As she sits on the chair

A wave of her fingers
And her wishes are done
Who is this mystery woman?
Where does she come from?

I stare in through the window
Wondering who she may be…
Slowly she turns
And stares back at me

Shadows dance across her face
Distorting her features…
Who hides behind the mask
Of this unnatural creature?

I reach out my hand
To clear out the glass
Wiping away the dust
From many days past…

She reaches out to me
Her hand touching mine
The tentative touch
Sends a shiver down my spine

As the haziness clears
A familiar face I see
A face I know so well
Stares back at me

The shadows lengthen
My fear grows
I see it in her eyes
Oh yes, she knows

I am drawn to her
It’s a spell I cannot break
I am compelled towards her…
With every step I take...

My doppelganger
My alter ego
My other half
My anti-hero

The window it seems
Is a piece of glass
Through which she needs
My help to pass

Again I reach out
And help her through
Into this world
Of thoughts so new

As we stand
Side by side
Our thoughts
Begin to collide

A battle for power
Her strength against mine
We are opposite sides
Of the same coin

We cannot be apart
We cannot face each other
Who will succeed
And who will suffer?

Dominance is
our adrenalin rush
who is mightier
when it comes to the push?

Is it the mask
The public sees?
Or the hidden face
So hard to please?

Is there a compromise
Between the two?
How do we know
Who to choose?

The truth within
Or the lies without?
Or perhaps
It is the other way about?

The hidden soul
Or the outer shell?
On which of these
Must our focus dwell?

What is it
That the world must know?
Which of these
Should be allowed to grow?

The imperfection
Of self-perception?
Or the acceptance
Of a beautiful presence?

Touring a disillusioned mind...Next stop...who knows land...

There are days when I feel like the world is in the palm of my hands.  I am invincible.  Nothing can bring me down, nothing at all.

Often, all it takes is a very small incident to change this feeling completely around.  A harshly spoken word, a little misunderstanding, someone being inconsiderate at a supermarket…these little things can cause such a major disruption in an otherwise idyllic day.

People often don’t realize how their actions and words affect the world around them.  People usually underestimate the power of a smile over a frown.

I started today in a good mood, even though I was restless most of last night.  I was jolly, dancing along with the music, laughing, enjoying myself.  Somehow, things changed.  I began to feel low and my whole mood became morose.

The catalyst?  The phrase “What you bought for me isn’t my taste - its rather ugly, go change it”.  Being the “good” person that I am, naturally I obliged.  However, the complete mood swing had already started.

It scared me how drastic the change was.  On my way home, the urge to accelerate instead of brake as I was approaching the end of the road was so strong, I had to clench my fists to stop myself from doing something drastic.

Does this incident mean I am classified as suicidal? Perhaps bipolar is the cap that fits? Clinical depression? Or just a plain old simple reaction to a sudden increase in the stress of daily living?

I’m rather fond of searching online for mental tests.  But, if my results are anything to go by, I should probably be locked in a padded room wearing a jacket that lets me hug myself.

Lately, there has been a drastic increase of stress in my work life.  The work load has increased due to the sudden illness of a colleague as well as a whole new type of job to be learned due to the partial sale of the business.  It hasn't been easy and a means of de-stressing seems currently unattainable.

In this rat-race of life, there is barely time for anything.  It is a common misconception that, by living in a small town instead of the big city, we lead a far more relaxed life.  UNTRUE!  Yes, we do not have to face heavy traffic and leaving and returning home at ridiculous hours just to have a career, but there are many other forms of activities that ensure we are busy always.

And in this busy lifestyle, we sometimes forget what it means to be nice to others.  I am so guilty of this myself.  My two pet hates: Bad parking and bad shopping…and often I do not hesitate to speak my mind about the matter…and very often I say it to the face of the person concerned.

In my already bad mood, I trooped off to the shop to exchange the ugly and in bad taste item.  While standing in the que, the woman behind me kept standing as close as possible and bumping me with her packets.  I kept moving and so did she.  Eventually, I turned around and said to her that no matter how many times she hits me with her packet, the que will not move any faster.  Needless to say, she wasn't too pleased with me.  Was I wrong? Not really…could I have handled the matter better? Most definitely… did I care at the time? Nope, I was still ticked off because of someone else’s remark.  And that is how a chain of bad moods spreads.

This doesn't necessarily mean I am an evil and vindictive person.  Neither does it mean that those around me are saints and put up with all of my nonsense.  We are all human and humans are flawed in many ways.  We all like to think that we are better than others.  I find myself doing that a lot; when a problem arises, I tend to downplay my fault and highlight the other person’s wrong.  It’s unfair of course, but such is human nature.

Changing to become a better person is actually rather hard work.  But the hardest step of all is realizing where you are going wrong.  I am stubborn as hell and refuse to accept that I am wrong.  But, later in the solitude of my mind, I do realize that sometimes I’m just being an idiot.  But building up that courage to go an apologise…oh man is that a gargantuan task.

I have been doing a lot of soul-searching lately.  There have been many things that I have come to realize I do not like about myself.  Mahatma Gandhi said “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.  If I want my world and my surroundings to become better, naturally I have to become better too.

This journey is long and hard and there are so many curves.  Sometimes I wonder if it is even worth the effort.  And then I think about how bad I feel when someone is nasty to me unnecessarily.  Then I feel really bad about the way I treat some people.

Sometimes, this leads to a great amount of sadness; sometimes it leads to anger and frustration at the world in general.  But these days it never leads to tears.  I seem to have lost my ability to cry.  A friend recently said to me, perhaps I need a good cry to release pent-up tension and wash out my eyes so I can see the world a bit more clearly.  Perhaps he is right.  Only time will tell where this journey of self-discovery takes me to next…a mental breakdown, a teary release of tension, or perhaps I will just renew my ticket and carry on as I am…

Soul searching..the journey within

In the pursuit of happiness, we come across many different things.  It is quite strange how we claim to be unique individuals and yet we rely so much on the opinion of others.  It’s actually rather frightening how much of an influence the opinions of those around us have on our emotions and self-worth.

Recently, I went to visit a very important someone in my life.  The importance of this person is based purely on her branch in my family tree and not on any emotional bond we share.  Visiting her out of duty as opposed to actually wanting to always brings my fears and insecurities to the surface.  There are people in our daily lives from whom we expect unconditional love.  She is such a person.  Sadly, it seems she didn’t receive the unconditional love memo.

I am always nervous around her as, no matter what the circumstances or surroundings, she always has a nasty comment to pass.  I have grown to dread the required calls and forced affection; I am always on edge, wondering and fearing what new comment will I have to face now.

There’s always something that never goes right.  If it isn’t dressing and the way I look, it’s the things I do and the way I do them.  It has become the norm to accept criticism.  Regardless of how well a deed is done, there is always a fault to be found.

It’s a funny thing though.  Although I am the only child, I am not the only leaf that stems from this branch of the tree.  There are others, we are 7 in total…all girls…all perfect…except for me.  I wonder sometimes, from where does the criticism stem?  Is there a method to this madness?  Is it, on some subconscious level, a way of motivating me? Or is it because I am thought to be “not good enough”?

There are many such people who cross our paths on a daily basis.  But those that have a part in our past have a great influence on our future.  When you get used to hearing the criticism, a genuine compliment is taken as a joke.  Negativity to that extent leads to an inferiority complex.  It adds to the tension of an already stressed life.

On the flip side of this coin, there are those genuinely good people, people whose happiness stems from the happiness of others, people who will go all out of their way to ensure your comfort regardless of their own and who never have a harsh word to say to anyone about anything.   People like this seem to be angels in this world of demons.

I know a someone who is so very special to me; a friend.  This someone I speak to whenever I can, simply because he exudes and aura of love.  No matter how low I feel, he has a way to bring me up again.  I rely on him for a boost, like a happy pill.

I am only human.  I have a dependence issue.  I depend on the people surrounding me to dictate my mood.  Some days I will be so happy and energetic, and all it will take is a hurried reply to deflate me.  There are days when I feel so down, all I want to do is curl up in a ball in a corner and forget my very existence.  On those days, all it takes is a someone’s hello to re-energise me.

We live in ever-changing times and, along with it, we are surrounded by ever-changing people.  There are those who mean the world to you and for whom you will sacrifice your all.  Sometimes, they take it for granted that you will always be that way with them.  All it takes is 1 lie, 1 broken link in the chain of trust to make that person number 1 on your unwanted list.  Sometimes, we hang on to their memories and use it as a crutch.  Sometimes the pain is too much and you cannot bear the burden of having them around.  And sometimes the lines blur and, even though it’s unbearable to see them every day,  it’s a lot worse to not have them around at all.

In certain instances, we forget that we need to take care of ourselves first before we can take care of others.  We hold on to the past.  Someone once said:  “holding on to the past is like holding on to a cactus; the tighter your grip, the more it hurts.”  I haven’t realized the enormous truth in this statement until recently.

Just recently I have been so focused on the past, I almost forgot to live in the present and prepare for the future.  I had forgotten what it was to be truly happy and to do the things that ensured my happiness.  I was so busy trying to fit in with the opinions of others, I had forgotten how important my own opinion is.

Being buried under the negativity makes it very hard to lift one’s head and look towards the light.  Sometimes you need a reminder of the fact that, despite how someone else may look at you, you should always look at yourself with love.  We are all created with love and given a life in which the pursuit of happiness is the pursuit of self-love.

I truly believe that, once you have achieved the ability to look into the mirror and think:  “I am perfect and beautiful for this is the way God made me”, then you are almost at the summit of happiness.  The last few steps are just being grateful for all that we have been given.

It is extremely hard to shrug off the opinions of others and be proud of who you are and all that you have achieved.  There are days when I wonder why I even bother.  And then something always happens to remind me of how fortunate I am.  I may not have it all, but what I do have is a lot.

To look deep within your heart and soul to seek your true essence is a journey full of wrong turns.  I am far from the end of mine, but every journey begins with that first step.  Mine was to filter the good from the bad and surround myself with people and things that make me smile to myself when I am alone.

There is most certainly a face that we show the public and it is almost always different from the face that stares back at us from the mirror in our most private moments.  True happiness can only be achieved when we bridge the gap between these two faces.  You are only truly happy when you no longer have to hide behind a public mask, when your achievements and ideals are what the world sees.  If they don’t accept you for it, so be it.  But when you have to hide what you are capable of simply because the worlds doesn’t share your opinion, you carry around a heavy burden.

When asked to define happiness, a lot of people say they wish they had riches, or they were involved in a lasting relationship, some say their happiness stems from being a parent or from their careers.  We all have different needs to fulfill that ensure our happiness.  All of this arises from the same basic need, love yourself.  If you do not love yourself, you will never be motivated enough to pursue wealth or a career, you will never be able to love someone without searching for faults that reflect your insecurities.

Another quote that always stayed with me is:  “nobody said that life would be easy, only that it would be worth it”.  All of the sacrifices we have made in life, all of the mistakes, all of the tears, every passing memory has brought us to this point and made us who we are.  In order to move forward, we must be willing to accept that we cannot change what has happened, but we have the power within us to change how we react to what will happen.

I am quick to pass a sarcastic comment if I’m in a bad mood, with no regard to the feelings of the person I am talking to.  This is my bad habit and I need to break it.  When I look in the mirror, I am unhappy.  I see a person who dreams but isn’t willing to wake up and make it happen, I see a person who lashes out at others when hurt just so they can hurt too, I see a person who cries when nobody is looking and criticizes others for exposing their emotions, I see a person who doesn’t know what she wants yet complains when others lose their direction.  I see a person who has discovered their faults and is willing to try and change.

I am taking my first step, I am trying so very hard to be a better me.  I am trying to become the person I would love as opposed to the person who wishes to be loved without allowing others to love her.  Right now, if I were to meet myself, we wouldn’t get along.  I do not have the qualities in me that I wish to have in a friend.  However, with each passing day, I am coming ever closer to that person…

The struggle for domination

A cloudless sky
On a moonlit night
A whispered endearment
Makes me shiver with delight

I smile and look back
And reach for your outstretched hand
You run your fingers through my hair
Smoothing the wayward strands

I look deep onto your eyes
The very depth of your soul
It says to me
You are the half that makes me whole

You pull me closer
And I snuggle in your arms
I feel warm and safe
And protected from all harm

A gentle breeze stirs the leaves
The crickets chirp a song
Encouraging us to explore this love
And let it grow strong

I lean back against you
And feel your arms tighten
Tense and alert you grow
My apprehension heightens

A sudden silence
A distant howl
A rustle of leaves
And a low mean growl

The clouds begin to gather
And cover the moon like a shroud
Slowly we turn
And I gasp out loud

In the last sliver of moonlight
I see an evil gleam
Of vicious eyes
My breath catches and I cannot scream

We turn to run
As darkness descends
I trust his guidance
And on him I depend

Racing across the jagged ground
We stumble and fall
We hear the panting get closer
Is this the end of it all?

Bats scatter into the night
A figure flies out of the trees
We try to rise
But fall back helpless on our knees

We hear him move
A sleek stealthy stalk
Around us in a circle
He walks and walks

A musty smell
Of the ages gone by
Of the earth and its cousins
And the essence of the sky

His aura shimmers
In the darkened night
A glowing orb
Shining so bright

My companion struggles
To shield my fallen form
He tries to keep me safe
From the approaching storm

A frustrated grunt
And I feel him pulled away
By rough hands
And the world starts to sway

The blackness grows thicker
And engulfs me
And as I close my eyes
It’s his strange smile I see

He has succeeded
This darkened creature
In destroying

Love’s every feature…
